Book Description
Taking a direct route, Essential Topology
brings the most important aspects of modern
topology within reach of a second-year
undergraduate student. Based on courses
given at the University of Wales Swansea, it
begins with a discussion of continuity and,
by way of many examples, leads to the
celebrated “Hairy Ball theorem” and on to
homotopy and homology: the cornerstones of
contemporary algebraic topology.

“ As a boy, Brian Greene read Albert
Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus and was
transformed. Camus, in Greene's paraphrase,
insisted that the hero triumphs "by
relinquishing everything beyond immediate
experience." After wrestling with this idea,
however, Greene rejected Camus and realized
that his true idols were physicists;
scientists who struggled "to assess life and
to experience the universe at all possible
levels, not just those that happened to be
accessible to our frail human senses." His
driving question in The Fabric of the
Cosmos, then, is fundamental: "What is
reality?" Over sixteen chapters, he traces
the evolving human understanding of the
substrate of the universe, from classical
physics to ten-dimensional M-Theory.

Book Description
An accessible introduction to string theory,
this book provides a detailed and
self-contained demonstration of the main
concepts involved. The first part deals with
basic ideas, reviewing special relativity
and electromagnetism while introducing the
concept of extra dimensions. D-branes and
the classical dynamics of relativistic
strings are discussed next, and the
quantization of open and closed bosonic
strings in the light-cone gauge, along with
a brief introduction to superstrings. The
second part begins with a detailed study of
D-branes followed by string thermodynamics.
It discusses possible physical applications,
and covers T-duality of open and closed
strings, electromagnetic fields on D-branes,
Born/Infeld electrodynamics, covariant
string quantization and string interactions.
Primarily aimed as a textbook for advanced
undergraduate and beginning graduate
courses, it will also be ideal for a wide
range of scientists and mathematicians who
are curious about string theory.

The modern subject of differential forms
subsumes classical vector calculus. This
text presents differential forms from a
geometric perspective accessible at the
sophomore undergraduate level. The book
begins with basic concepts such as partial
differentiation and multiple integration and
gently develops the entire machinery of
differential forms. The author approaches
the subject with the idea that complex
concepts can be built up by analogy from
simpler cases, which, being inherently
geometric, often can be best understood
visually.

This fourth edition of one of the classic
logic textbooks has been thoroughly revised
by John Burgess. The aim is to increase the
pedagogical value of the book for the core
market of students of philosophy and for
students of mathematics and computer science
as well. This book has become a classic
because of its accessibility to students
without a mathematical background, and
because it covers not simply the staple
topics of an intermediate logic course such
as Godel’s Incompleteness Theorems, but also
a large number of optional topics from
Turing’s theory of computability to Ramsey’s
theorem. John Burgess has now enhanced the
book by adding a selection of problems at
the end of each chapter, and by reorganising
and rewriting chapters to make them more
independent of each other and thus to
increase the range of options available to
instructors as to what to cover and what to

The computer hardware and software
industry is committed to using formal
methods. As a result, it is crucial that
students who take automata theory and
logic courses retain what they have
learned and understand how to use their
knowledge. Yet many textbooks typically
emphasize automata theory only, not
logic, thus losing a valuable
opportunity to tie these subjects
together and reinforce learning. In
fact, automata theory and logic evolved
hand-in-hand, yet this connection was
severed in the '70s as separate
automata-theory and logic courses became
possible. Now, with computer science
departments suffering from overcrowded
syllabi, it is often possible for
undergraduates to get a BS without
having had to take a course in

There used to be a saying in
mathematical circles that went something
like "Children work with equalities;
grownups work with inequalities." An
overstatement perhaps, but a facility
with inequalities does seem to be
necessary for an understanding of much
of mathematics at intermediate and
higher levels. In particular, a working
knowledge of inequalities can be
beneficial to the practicing engineer.
Inequalities are central to the
definitions of all limiting processes,
including differention and integration.
When exact solutions are unavailable,
inconvenient, or unnecessary,
inqualities can be used to obtain error
bounds for numerical approximation.
Inqualities can also lead to an
understanding of the qualitative
behavior of solutions. This guide to
inequalities was written specifically
with engineers and other applied
scientists in mind.

Book Description:
This book follows Klein’s proposal of
studying geometry by looking at the
symmetries (or rigid motions) of the
space in question. In this way the
classical geometries are studied:
Euclidean, affine, elliptic, projective
and hyperbolic. For simplicity the focus
is on the two-dimensional case, which is
already rich enough, though some aspects
of the 3 or $n$-dimensional geometries
are included. Once plane geometry is
well understood, it is much easier to go
into higher dimensions.

road leading to the practical
application of photonic band gaps. These
new optimal devices are based on
symmetry and resonance and the benefits
and limitations of hybrid "two
dimensional" slab systems in three
dimensions. The book also explains that
they also signify a return to the ideal
of an omnidirectional band gap in a
structure inspired by and emulating the
simplicity of two dimensions. Finally,
the book takes a look at computational

“Just as in its 1st edition, this book
starts with illustrations of the ubiquitous
character of optimization, and describes
numerical algorithms in a tutorial way. It
covers fundamental algorithms as well as
more specialized and advanced topics for
unconstrained and constrained problems. Most
of the algorithms are explained in a
detailed manner, allowing straightforward
implementation. Theoretical aspects of the
approaches chosen are also addressed with
care, often using minimal assumptions.
This new edition contains computational
exercises in the form of case studies which
help understanding optimization methods
beyond their theoretical, description, when
coming to actual implementation. Besides,
the nonsmooth optimization part has been
substantially reorganized and expanded.”

Perturbation theory, one of the most
intriguing and essential topics in
mathematics, and its applications to the
natural and engineering sciences is the main
focus of this workbook. In a systematic
introductory manner, this unique book
deliniates boundary layer theory for
ordinary and partial differential equations,
multi-timescale phenomena for nonlinear
oscillations, diffusion and nonlinear wave
equations. The book provides analysis of
simple examples in the context of the
general theory, as well as a final
discussion of the more advanced problems.
Precise estimates and excursions into the
theoretical background makes this workbook
valuable to both the applied sciences and
mathematics fields. As a bonus in its last
chapter the book includes a collection of
rare and useful pieces of literature, such
as the summary of the Perturbation theory of
Matrices. Detailed illustrations,
stimulating examples and exercises as well
as a clear explanation of the underlying
theory makes this workbook ideal for senior
undergraduate and beginning graduate
students in applied mathematics as well as
science and engineering fields.

by Boris Kovalerchuk (Editor), James Schwing
(Editor) "Visual problem solving has been
known for millennia as both great success
and failure in science, mathematics, and
technology..."
Advanced visual analysis and problem solving
has been conducted successfully for
millennia. The Pythagorean Theorem was
proven using visual means more than 2000
years ago. In the 19th century, John Snow
stopped a cholera epidemic in London by
proposing that a specific water pump be shut
down. He discovered that pump by visually
correlating data on a city map. The goal of
this book is to present the current trends
in visual and spatial analysis for data
mining, reasoning, problem solving and
decision-making. This is the first book to
focus on visual decision making and problem
solving in general with specific
applications in the geospatial domain -
combining theory with real-world practice.
The book is unique in its integration of
modern symbolic and visual approaches to
decision making and problem solving. As
such, it ties together much of the monograph
and rextbook literature in these emerging
areas.

This is a mathematical text suitable for
students of engineering and science who are
at the third year undergraduate level or
beyond. It is a book of applicable
mathematics. It avoids the approach of
listing only the techniques, followed by a
few examples, without explaining why the
techniques work. Thus, it provides not only
the know-how but also the know-why. Equally,
the text has not been written as a book of
pure mathematics with a list of theorems
followed by their proofs. The authors' aim
is to help students develop an understanding
of mathematics and its applications. They
have refrained from using clich's like "it
is obvious" and "it can be shown", which may
be true only to a mature mathematician. On
the whole, the authors have been generous in
writing down all the steps in solving the
example problems.
The book comprises ten chapters. Each
chapter contains several solved problems
clarifying the introduced concepts. Some of
the examples are taken from the recent
literature and serve to illustrate the
applications in various fields of
engineering and science. At the end of each
chapter, there are assignment problems with
two levels of difficulty. A list of
references is provided at the end of the
book.
This book is the product of a close
collaboration between two mathematicians and
an engineer. The engineer has been helpful

This book covers a broad range of important topics and
recent developments in this field. First, the general
language of quantum field theory is developed in a way
appropriate for dealing with systems having a large
number of degrees of freedom. This paves the way for a
description of the basic processes in such systems, the
emphasis being on phase transitions. Applications
include various aspects of superfluidity and
superconductivity, as well as a detailed description of
the fractional quantum.

Review
From the first edition: 'This
book will serve as a useful
introduction to those entering
the field, while for those
already versed in the subject it
provides a timely survey of what
has been achieved.' Journal of
Statistical Physics
This collection of newly
commissioned essays by
international contributors
offers a representative overview
of the most important
developments in contemporary
philosophical logic. Written by
experts from a variety of
different logical and
philosophical perspectives, the
volume presents controversies in
philosophical implications and
applications of formal symbolic
logic.
Coherent, well organized text
familiarizes readers with
complete theory of logical
inference and its applications
to math and the empirical
sciences. Part I deals with
formal principles of inference
and definition. Part II explores
elementary intuitive set theory,
with separate chapters on sets,
relations, and functions. Last
section introduces numerous
examples of axiomatically
formulated theories.

An introduction to the calculus, with an
excellent balance between theory and
technique. Integration is treated before
differentiation--this is a departure from
most modern texts, but it is historically
correct, and it is the best way to establish
the true connection between the integral and
the derivative. Proofs of all the important
theorems are given, generally preceded by
geometric or intuitive discussion. This
Second Edition introduces the mean-value
theorems and their applications earlier in
the text, incorporates a treatment of linear
algebra, and contains many new and easier
exercises. As in the first edition, an
interesting historical introduction precedes
each important new concept
